Introduction
Rhodes is the largest island of the Dodecanese, combining a cosmopolitan lifestyle with ancient monuments, tranquil seafront and mountain villages. The old walled city, built by the Knights of St John, has a magical medieval atmosphere, with cobbled streets and stone arches, dominated by the Palace of the Grand Master. The Old Town is a maze of narrow streets bustling with activity day and night. The New Town is situated outside the old city close to the popular beach areas and is where most modern hotels are located. Ixia, one of the most popular beaches on Rhodes, is located 3km from the town centre.
English is spoken by people in the tourism business. Many staff at hotels, casinos, shops, restaurants and museums will speak English.
